The greek nutrition in times of austerity
Dr. George Boskou,

What is the nutrition of the Greeks in history when as nation suffered recession and austerity? The are several foods that have nourished generations and generations of Greeks. Modern research demonstrated that these foods are of high nutritional value. The famous Greek cuisine, like the Italian cuisine, is the cooking of the poor (“cucina povera” in Italian). The Greek refugees around the world, poor people in general, spread out the Greek gastronomy. Several eating habits of the Greek orthodox celebrations involve food, prepared in quantities with traditional methods, in a manner to preserve the local society. During wartime and occupation by other nations the Greeks invented methods of "circumstantial cooking", in other words cooking with what was available and with the most feasible method. The model of Mediterranean diet, is now considered one the best schemes for health eating. The foods that lay at the bottom of the pyramid are cheaper than the food at the top. On the other hand, eating habits of western Europe adopted in the 60's. 70's and 80's are not considered as examples of good nutrition. Despite the fact that Greece has entered a period of consistent recession and austerity since 2010, there is still affluence of food, but the demand of cheap food has increased. The Mediterranean diet seems to be a good solution to low cost but healthy nutrition.
